Breakthrough in LNG Industry

Large quantities of natural gas were first discovered in the Southwest Ampa field off the coast of Brunei Darussalam in the early 60’s.

With the vision of supplying LNG to Japan, negotiation took place with the Tokyo Gas Company to establish a sales outlet for the natural gas produced in Brunei Darussalam.

The plan was simple: to build a gas liquefication plant in Brunei Darussalam.

Introduction of Large-Scale Gas Liquefaction and LNG Transportation

The Brunei LNG Plant in Lumut was the first in the Western Pacific to introduce large-scale gas liquefaction and the transportation of LNG.

It was officially launched on 4 April 1973 by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Timely Shipping and Efficient Cogeneration Plant

In November 1980. Brunei LNG achieved yet another milestone to be proud of as Pehin Dato Haji Isa, the then General Adviser to His Majesty turned on the switch to commence the loading operation of the 1000th cargo to Japan on S. S Gadinia.

Establishing Lumut Cogeneration Plant

The Lumut Cogeneration Plant, established in 1987 as a joint initiative with the Government of Brunei Darussalam and Brunei Shell Petroleum, enhances resource efficiency by generating electricity for surrounding areas while supplying waste heat for steam production at the LNG plant. Sustainability is further supported through an integrated water management system that treats, recirculates, and reuses water drawn from the Badas River to meet cooling, process, and utility needs.

Mid-Ship Loading Facility

Brunei LNG built a new LNG mid-ship loading facility, enabling safer loading operations.

It was part of the Brunei LNG’s rejuvenation programme to prepare the Plant for the modern challenges of the 21st century.

Opening of LPG Plant

The new Liquid Propone Gas (LPG) Requalification Plant at Brunei LNG was official opened. The new facility was the first of its kind in Brunei Darussalam.

Newly Completed Control Room

The newly completed control room was operated to accommodate the converted operating unit. Brunei LNG’s laboratory was granted International Standards Organisation (“ISO”) accreditation – the first laboratory in the country to meet the tough ISO IEC guide 25 certification requirements.

Local Talents, Safety and Successful Partnerships

Dato Padoka Haji Hamdillah was appointed in December 2000, as the first Bruneian to become Brunei LNG Chief Executive Officer, 31 years after Brunei LNG was established.

Brunei LNG also achieved record LNG sales of 194 cargoes, the highest in the 28 years of Brunei LNG’s history. For the second consecutive calendar year, Brunei LNG’s own and contractor staff worked without any LTI for more than 4 million man-hours.

30 Years of Successful Partnership

Brunei LNG celebrated its 30 years of successful partnership with the consortium of Japanese buyers in 2003.

The excellent long-term relationship and cooperation between Brunei LNG and the three Japanese buyers could not have been done without corresponding dedication and commitment from them.

Moving Forward with Diversity and Inclusion

Brunei LNG made great strides in diversity and inclusion when the first batch of female operators were hired in 2009, showcasing Brunei LNG as an equal opportunity employer promoting diversity in the organisation, in what was traditionally seen as a male dominated role.

It was a very proud moment for Brunei LNG and a huge milestone for the Company, as well as the country with regards to advancement of women in the workplace.

The company also commissioned new custom-made rail car vehicles in 2012 that were of higher safety standards and operationally more efficient.

Powering Up Electrical Public Grid in Lumut

A historic milestone was achieved when COGEN II, initiated in 2012 as an unincorporated joint venture between Brunei LNG, BSP, and the Department of Electrical Services (“DES”), supplied its first power to the electrical public grid in Lumut.

Nearly B$1.5 Billion Contributed

Brunei LNG contributed close to B$1.5 billion to the nation’s economy, with a record of 6.35 million tonnes of LNG sales – exceeding LNG production and sales plan.

First Carbon Neutral LNG Cargo in Southeast Asia

In July 2021, Brunei LNG delivered its first carbon neutral LNG cargo, making it the first LNG supplier in the Southeast Asian region to do so. The integrated collaboration between Brunei LNG, Shell, and Osaka Gas marked an important milestone in Brunei LNG’s journey as a key partner for energy transition, enabling customers to move towards their net zero ambition by compensating the full lifecycle carbon dioxide (C02) emissions of the cargo by using carbon offset from nature-based solutions.
